Welcome to the Rebirth of Tranmere. ( Date - 04/02/02) and on-going.

As can be seen from the following pictures, Tranmere Urban village is being built at this moment.

Over the last number of years, this area has been earmarked for redevelopment ant has now started another phase. At the edge of Tranmere is the Shipyard of what was once called Cammell Laird and in it's heyday employed thousands of local people. Many ships were built and launched into the river Mersey. About 10 months ago, the yard closed down.

On the 17th June 2002, the new owners of Cammell Laird, now a company from Southampton called A & P opened the shipyard for business.

The first phase was the building of a Lidl Foodstore and has now been open for a year and has an approximate area of 17,500 square feet.

Viewed from outside and inside

These pictures are the beginning of phase two on the 3rd February 2002.

These pictures are taken 20th June 2002 and as can be seen, progress is quick.

Taken today, Christmas day 2002 and nearing completion.

And finally, completion.

This new Urban Village Square will have shops and housing above them as well as a Community Centre and what is called a 'One Stop Shop' which gives access to local government agencies, e.g. housing, social services etc. and our local book library is also to be relocated to here.

As the construction continues, there will be further pictures available to be seen, and hopefully by Christmas this year (2002) should show the final view of this exciting project.

The Library Opened on the 27th February 2003 but the completion of the whole building was about 7 days before. According to the local newspaper, all Internet access in the public libraries on the Wirral will be free of charge from the 1st April 2003. However, this could well be an 'april fools' joke for everybody. But as I update it. (10th September 2003) It is not a joke and only the first hour is free but it will be extended at half hour intervals providing there is vacant machines.
